DPM – Focus on schools and electricity, not eels

Deputy Prime Minister Tan Sri Muhyddin Yassin 2-day visit to Sabah is one of disappointment. As the Education Minister he has every right to be embarrassed on the condition of Sabah’s schools as there are 27 secondary schools which were squatting in primary school premises.  The RM50 million per school should not be a problem as Sabah is supposed to be given billions of ringgit of fund. There are talks of these billions been allocated to Sabah but so far there is nothing tangible to show for the people to see. The DPM should not only visit these schools but to check on the billions been spent here.

When walking about in the Donggongon Tamu the DPM should be asking how the farmers are doing under the BN government rather than asking on the benefit of consuming freshwater eels (BP, 13th March 2010). At the same time Muhyiddin should be concerned about the current issue of electricity problem in Sabah. UMNO kalabakan MP Ghapur Salleh has openly condemned SESB for using 2nd hand generators for Tawau and Kalabakan which are the main cause of power failures. On the other hand we are informed by Energy, Green Technology and Water Minister that the Federal Government had spent a total of RM3.1 billion to develop electricity supply in Sabah (DE, 14th March 2010).

The Energy, Green Technology and Water Minister Datuk Seri Peter Chin Fah Kui has also upped the tempo by promising to resign from office if the target of considerably reduced electricity interruption rate in Sabah by December 2010 is not realised (BP, 14th March 2010). The bet is Datuk Chin will have to resign because as in the case of Tan Sri Bernard Dompok, the top people in the Civil Service do not listen to non-UMNO Ministers. The call by Sabah Resource Development and Information Technology Minister Datuk Yee Moh Chai for SESB Managing Director Baharin Din to resign is timely (DE, 14th March 2010). Hopefully, the government has ears for him and a new MD will be able to deliver.
